Andrew Mitchell MP joins the NSPCC ChildLine team in Birmingham to discuss their work with vulnerable children

19 January 2010

Andrew Mitchell MP has visited Birmingham’s NSPCC centre where he spent the afternoon with the ChildLine team to see first-hand the work they do to help vulnerable children throughout the West Midlands.

Andrew met with team members, all of whom are volunteers, to thank them for their difficult but inspirational work.

Andrew said, “ChildLine makes a real difference to the lives of vulnerable children and young people throughout Sutton, Birmingham and the UK.  A huge thank you to all the volunteers in Birmingham who provide this source of comfort to those children who have no where else to turn.

ChildLine Birmingham launched in April 2002 as ChildLine’s tenth counselling centre.  Last year (2008/09), ChildLine in Birmingham took 22,837 calls from children and young people with no one else to turn to, and provided a total of 10,385 counselling hours.

Despite this feat, the centre still needs more volunteers, especially those who will work the unsociable evening hours from midnight to six.

Services manager Claire Brown said: “We don’t want to miss a single child or young person.  By volunteering you could help save a life.”
