Andrew Mitchell MP: Haiti needs our help

20 January 2010

Andrew Mitchell MP has added his voice to calls to help disaster stricken Haiti by encouraging constituents who want to help to donate to the Disaster Emergency Committee – an umbrella group of 13 major British-based charities.

Mr Mitchell said, “Ten days ago, Haiti, the poorest country in the western hemisphere, was hit head-on by an enormous earthquake.

“The full impact of that earthquake is now emerging and it’s clear that hundreds of thousands of people have either been killed or left homeless.

“It’s essential that this small nation gets the help it needs as quickly as possible.

“Five years ago the British public raised £392m in the wake of the Boxing Day Tsunami, and I’ve no doubt we will be similarly generous.  Britain is an incredibly compassionate and generous nation and nowhere more so than in Sutton Coldfield.

“The best way to help is to donate directly to the Disaster Emergency Committee.  Whatever you can afford to give, it all makes a difference.

“In the meantime, I know our thoughts and prayers are with all those people who have suffered so much in Haiti over the last ten days.”

To make a donation call 0370 60 60 900 or visit www.dec.org.uk, donate over the counter at any post office or high street bank, or send a cheque made payable to ‘DEC Haiti Earthquake Appeal’ to ‘PO Box 999, London, EC3A 3AA’.
